Metal Mike phonics blending game

Chick 2 is now at the stage where he's picking up a lot more sounds and is beginning to blend and segment quite comfortably.

At school, one of my challenges at the moment is getting the children to blend (knowing that c-a-t is cat). So, as a way to try and engage them a bit more, I made a 'metal mike' head. It was pretty easy - just a bit of tin foil over a shoe box with 2 old hot chocolate lids with a pipe cleaner for the antennae. I think he's quite sweet :)

He is a robot who can only speak in sounds. He also likes to eat words.

Our first game, I sound talked the word eg. "d-o-g" and Chick 2 guessed the word then had to try and find it. He looked for the initial sounds that he recognized and then turned it over to see if he got it right. He then got to feed it to Metal mike - which he thought was hilarious.

We also reversed the roles next, he became the voice of metal mike and segmented a word to me (we turned the cards to the picture side for this game). I then had to guess what he wanted and I fed it to him. He loved finishing the meal with "YUM YUM"

This is a great game to play with kids who are beginning phase 2 and are learning the principles of sound talking, blending and segmenting.

I think I will need to make another one of these to keep at home so he can play it with me again. I hope the kids at school love it as much as the little man did.
